Option Group: Communication - Made Fun and Inclusive

Our Communication option group is a fun, hands-on way for students to explore communication using signs, symbols, and speech. Aimed at students aged 11–19, this group is designed to support a wide range of learning needs and abilities in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Makaton is a language programme that helps people understand and be understood. It’s used by many individuals with communication difficulties, but it’s also a brilliant tool for promoting inclusion, empathy, and connection among all students.

In this group, students will:

• Learn key Makaton signs and symbols used in everyday life

• Build confidence in expressing themselves clearly and effectively

• Improve listening and understanding skills

• Take part in fun, practical activities like signing to songs, games, and role-play

• Work together, building teamwork and communication with others

Whether a student uses Makaton themselves or simply wants to support friends and become a more inclusive communicator, this group is all about making communication accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
